Pest proofing your property can be a daunting task. However, the best way to prevent rats and other pests from entering is by making sure there are no entry points for them on or around your home's exterior walls.
The following measures should help keep away these pesky creatures:
Vents and Air Bricks - it's important to cover these entrances with galvanised wire mesh so that air can circulate, but rodents aren't able get inside your property.
Doors -To prevent entry, fit brush/bristle strips to the bottom of your door. This is particularly necessary in older properties where a snug fit may not be present, and doors stick out from their frames too far for it to close.
Drains and Pipes – Rats are known to swim up damaged sewer pipe, so it is always worth keeping the toilet lid down! They also use drainpipes as a method of entry. By using tightly fitting metal screens or grates you can reduce their chances by regularly checking for breakage in these areas when we find any holes all should be fixed immediately because if there was an opening, they would have used them already.
Eaves - Any roofing that has been damaged should be fixed immediately. Wires mesh can be used to seal gaps in the structure of your home, and it’s very easy.
Pet Flaps – Rodents take advantage of pet flaps and use them as their own doors in and out of your property.
Gaps in Walls - If you're looking for a way to keep out the pesky rodents that are chewing holes in your wall, don't just patch it up because they'll just come back with an easier opening. Instead seal all gaps around utility wires and pipes by filling them in using wire wool or concrete or caulking.
Lawns and Shrubbery – Keep lawns and bushes well-trimmed to reduce shelter and hiding places around your home.
Roofs – Rats and squirrels will scale a building as well as using overhanging branches and wires to get into loft spaces, so ensure there are no broken tiles and gaps around your roof, you can seal off any gaps using wire mesh.
